A Formula 1 team is really an engineering company that manufactures race cars. What does risk management look like when the end user is a human being strapped inside a car traveling at nearly 200 mph? Matt Gallagher, Formula 1 veteran, discusses what "quality" means in the racing industry.

    And on the ninth day God looked down at the flourishing workshops and factories on the good earth and said: “These enterprises need a caretaker”. So, God made a quality manager. God said, I need someone who is willing to get up at dawn and work till sunset, understand the line worker and interpret for the CEO, eliminate waste and drive up fear and ask why, why, why, why, why. So, God made a quality manager. God said: “I need someone with the mind keen enough to see the processes as they really are. A soul brave enough to challenge the process flaws, and a heart big enough to make the needed changes while calming the human resistance to change, someone to visit cantankerous customers, tame cantankerous machinery, and reason with cantankerous auditors”. So, God made a quality manager God said: “I need someone to step night, after night, preparing for the big audit, suffer as the auditor identifies non-conformances, accept the blame for management and persist, until discovering the root causes of the broken processes. And once those causes are identified, fixed, verified, validated, I need someone to celebrate the resulting successful certification quietly and alone, because management is as slow to praise as it is quick to fault”. So, God made a quality manager. God said: “I need someone who with little support from operations can form a kaizen team and perform a Gemba walk, someone with skin thick enough to withstand anonymous criticism and outright deceit, who accepts the slings and arrows of those who rarely listen and do not understand when they do, and who knows that corrective actions are opportunities for excellence, not excuses for blame. I need someone who understands that continuous improvement is not a short-term fix or a flavor of the month”. So, God made a quality manager. God said: “I need someone with a broad perspective, wide vision and a healthy sense of comradery with colleagues both in and out of the organization, someone who after more than a full day's work in a factory or at the site is willing to accept the responsibility as chairperson of the local ASQ section and who can craft engaging articles for professional journals, all for the sheer joy of expanding knowledge and promoting quality. I need someone who accepts the benchmarking as a two-way street, that exchanging information is an opportunity as opposed to the threat”. So, God made a quality manager. God said: “I need someone who can function as the glue of the organization even though no one acknowledges that fact, someone who would laugh then sigh and then reply with smiling eyes when well-prepared young assistants said they want to spend their lives doing what their mentor does”. So, God made a quality manager.

    This seems like quite the option! Similar power of the 960, with the portability of a 403. Although I do have to disagree with one statement he made regarding the leveling / orient to gravity of the 400s. I believe the 403 can operate without having to level. As long as you can set a reference off the surface or structure being measured, you’d be good.

    Enjoyed the interview. It was a great story on membership, diversity, the quality profession, and ASQ's fundamental directions. However, it still misses the boat on how CEOs and top-level corporate executives can make quality a priority in any field of endeavor. Without their buy-in, we will still have the problems cited in this interview such as J&J's stumble regarding COVID vaccines and baby formula, Boeing's issues with regards to the 737 max, and many others. I wish Quality Digest would ask the tough questions regarding not just the quality profession, but ways to obtain corporate buy-in. That seems to be the elephant in the room and perhaps the trade group, ASQE, could play a big role in making that (corporate buy-in) happen.

    EXCELLENT. SO GOOD. I love the "if you don't know what to do with someone, put them in Quality". These days Quality is lost. Process Control Charts aren't even taught by the current quality fads. When they are taught people make a complete mess of them. People are only concerned with the collection or worthless belts of ignorance. People have turned their backs on Deming.

    I enjoyed the interview, but I think you missed one of the most important aspects of quality and that is that CEOs and company executives have slowly changed their tune about quality in recent years. To fix that, like Deming, you have to talk to the CEOs themselves, or the message will never get to them. Here are some thoughts on that subject: Boeing's embarrassing situation with their 737 Max airplanes and the way that was handled is just one example of a corporation run amock. Takata airbag deadly explosions and the ultimate recalls resulting from corporate desire to reduce cost without knowing what they were doing to the safety of their vehicles. US Bank's recent disclosure that they, like Wells Fargo, opened accounts in their customer's name without their knowledge. The financial sector's constant push for more and more ways to separate people and their money (most of whom are not wealthy). Not one corrective action for the financial collapse of 2008 is meaningful. And, of course, any action by whistle-blowers is to be punished or ignored. The behavior of CEOs is anti-quality because all they are interested in is driving up the stock price. This is mainly because stock options are the biggest source of CEO wealth and their golden parachute. CEOs and corporate executives are themselves a case of poor quality. They lose sight of their real purpose. Where is the next Deming who will provide a resurgence of the quality movement?

    • @newbernbears
      @newbernbears 2 года назад

      The next Deming - Donald Wheeler he made it simpler for us all with XmR charts.

    • @mikeharkins2985
      @mikeharkins2985 2 года назад

      @@newbernbears Although Don Wheeler is probably the best candidate out there to replace Deming, he is in the same situation as Deming. Without a big publicity event like the NBC Whitepaper, he will be unable to impact the masses. Also, like Deming, he is getting to an age where he doesn't have a lot of time left to make an impact. Deming himself felt this and that is why he insisted on taking to the CEOs. I got this from talking to Deming's nephew at a conference some years ago. We just need a new NBC white paper that will show that quality is really important. Otherwise CEOs will continue to screw the public, their employees, and their customers while they become billionaires.

    People have absolutely had it with being asked to produce more, work harder and make more money that goes directly to the top while the worker gets very little for themselves that is not even keeping up with inflation even when inflation was at 2-3%. Now inflation is 3 x what it used to be. Also working harder than ever in a toxic work culture is helping people decide to not put up with needless bull crap. Good bosses will respond to this worker movement, bad/greedy bosses will keep the status quo and continue to blindly believe great workers grow on trees.
